The following ensembles are offered at Upper Yarra SC:

Classroom Music

Classroom music is compulsory for students in Years 7 and 8.  Students can choose to do music as an elective in Years 9 to 10.  In Years 11 and 12 students are offered VCE Music Performance (Group) Units 1-4.

Year 7-8 Classroom Music

Students create, make and present music through creative improvisation. They perform music playing independent lines of a known work within a music ensemble. The students explore the expressive qualities of music through observing dynamics in compositions and through expression in improvisation.  Students are taught how to prepare creative sound scapes, compose soundtracks and how to use computer music programs such as Audacity.  Students learn about musical instruments and also create their own.  Students study the history and styles of Rock Music, Film Music and music used in advertising.

Year 9-10 Classroom Music

This subject focuses on instrumental and ensemble playing, composition through the use of music technology, aural skills and the study of music history and literature.  Students also learn how to prepare for and stage a musical performance.  They learn about the music industry and how to get a music career started.  Recording technologies are also studied and students make their own recordings with the computer music studio.  Also covered is how the internet has changed the way we utilise music in the modern society.

Year 11-12 Classroom Music

Upper Yarra SC offers VCE Music: Performance Units 1 & 2 and VCE Music: Group Performance Units 3 & 4.

Music Performance develops intellectual, aesthetic and cultural understanding of the value and importance of music in solo and group settings.  As soloists and members of groups, students develop skills in preparing programs of works.  They learn about and apply musicianship as they create music and interpret and analyse solo and ensemble works in a range of styles.

In the performance of music, students develop their skills on a main instrument or voice.  They research and apply in performance relevant knowledge of performing, the rich heritage of music, theory of music and socio-cultural influences on the music studied.  Students experiment with interpretation and strike an appropriate balance, considering historical performance conventions, contemporary performance conventions and personal interpretation as they perform a wide range of styles and characters in music.
