The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award

Challenging young people to find their purpose, passion and place in the world to become world ready.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is the world’s leading youth achievement award. It is a global framework for non-formal education, which challenges young people to dream big, celebrate their achievements and make a difference in their world. Through developing transferable skills, increasing their fitness levels, cultivating a sense of adventure and volunteering in their community, the Award helps young people to find their purpose, passion and place in the world to become world ready. It operates in more than 130 countries and territories, helping to inspire millions of young people. And it’s not limited by the boundaries of one program or place. There are 1.3 million young people currently completing their own unique program, via hundreds of thousands of youth-focused partners and operators, including schools, youth organisations, examination boards and youth offender institutions.

There are three levels to the award starting at Bronze, progressing to Silver and completed at Gold. For each of the levels, students and participants need to complete four sections over a set period of time. The four sections include:

Physical recreation: This encourages young people to improve their fitness and performance, and enjoy healthy lifestyles for good mental and physical well-being.

Service: Participants volunteer in their communities, make a positive contribution to society and demonstrate social responsibility.

Skills: Enables participants to develop their talents, broaden their abilities, increase their self-confidence and improve their employability.

Adventurous journey: Young people discover a spirit of adventure and gain a deeper understanding of the environment and the great outdoors.

At UYSC for 2021

The Duke of Edinburgh Award will be run as a subject in 2021, for Year 9 and 10 students. Participants will be following the four sections of the Award with sections being completed both in class time and in students’ own time. The Duke of Edinburgh Bronze  will be awarded to students at the end of the semester, upon completion of all four sections.
